Kevin Spacey on Gay Marriage

At the Petra Nemcova's 2008 Happy Hearts Fund Gala, Kevin Spacey was asked about gay marriage by CelebsGoneGood. He said: "Well there’s no doubt that election night was a bittersweet night. But in some ways, these kinds of setbacks allow for a bigger fight, more challenges, and eventually we’re going to get it right. Eventually the American public will figure out that it really isn’t right to deny citizens basic civil human rights. And we can no longer allow that to happen. So the fact that these things were voted in, to me, it’s just an example of the fact that they had more money. How much money did the Mormon church put in? So I hope, like Arnold Schwarzenegger said, Don’t give up. Keep protesting." And the star concluded: "Look, I think at the end of the day, if people are given rights, and the same basic rights that any individual is given, then we are in fact honoring the Constitution of the United States. Anything less than that is unfair."

Barack Obama's Agenda for Gay Rights

Barack Obama has posted his agenda to transform America on his President-elect office's website, Change.gov. The Obama-Biden Plan supports the LGBT Community and includes to strengthen civil rights for Gay Americans :

- Expand Hate Crimes Statutes
- Fight Workplace Discrimination
- Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples
- Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage
- Expand Adoption Rights
- Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell
- Promote AIDS Prevention

The website quotes a Barack Obama's statement of June 2007 : "While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect." Read the Agenda here.

California Court asked to review Prop 8 ban

The California attorney general, Jerry Brown (picture), asked the State Supreme Court on Monday to review the constitutionality of Proposition 8 to provide closure and clarity on the ballot measure, which has prompted protests across the country and several challenges filed with the court. The central argument in the recently filed lawsuits is that Proposition 8 is a significant enough revision to the State Constitution to require approval by the Legislature. The NY Times reports that Mr. Brown reiterated in a news release that he believed that the 18,000 or so same-sex marriages performed in California before the Nov. 4 vote should remain valid.

Thousands protest Gay Marriage Ban

In one of the nation’s largest displays of support for gay rights, tens of thousands of people in cities across the U.S. turned out in support of same-sex marriage on Saturday, lending their voices to an issue that many gay men and lesbians consider a critical step to full equality. The demonstrations — from a sun-splashed throng in San Francisco to a chilly crowd in Minneapolis — came 11 days after California voters narrowly passed a ballot measure, Proposition 8, that outlawed previously legal same-sex ceremonies in the state, reports the New York Times. In Los Angeles, where wildfires had temporarily grabbed headlines from continuing protests over Proposition 8, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa addressed a crowd of about 9,000 people in Spanish and English, and seemed to express confidence that the measure, which is being challenged in California courts, would be overturned: "It’s the wind of change that has swept the nation. It is the wind of optimism and hope."

Elton John doesn't want to get married

Elton John and his partner David Furnish (picture) were in New York for the annual benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation reports USA Today. The singer commented California's Proposition 8: "What is wrong with Proposition 8 is that they went for marriage. Marriage is going to put a lot of people off, the word marriage." The couple tied the knot in a civil partnership ceremony in Windsor, England. But, clarified the singer, "We're not married. Let's get that right. We have a civil partnership. I don't want to be married. I'm very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships." he said.
