Amsterdam Gay Pride Canal Parade

Tens of thousands of people thronged Amsterdam Saturday (2008, Aug 2), to watch the city's biggest-ever parade of homosexuals floating flamboyantly down the historic canals in dazzling style. In a festive atmosphere the streets lining the canals and the bridges over them overflowed with members of the gay community, residents, tourists, party-goers and curious onlookers. Disco music pumped from the 80 boats passing through the canals in a four-hour spectacle that involved plenty of glistening male torsos, bikinis, glitter, feathers and boas. For the first time ever, members of the Dutch cabinet and Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen joined the parade to show political support for the gay cause. Mayor Cohen said in a statement earlier that gay acceptance appeared to be under threat. "The number of incidents of discrimination and of violence against gay people has increased in the past year," he said."It is time to stop talking about tolerance and focus instead on acceptance of sexual differences in Amsterdam," AFP reports.

EuroPride 2008, presented by Stockholm Pride, is a ten-day celebration featuring a unique combination of politics and partying. This year’s theme is “Swedish Sin, Breaking Borders”, focusing on international LGBT issues. Throughout the festival, EuroPride has a high profile across the city in association with museums, galleries, cinemas, clubs and shops. The Pride Parade, which has grown over the years to become something of a street party, will make its way through Stockholm on Sunday August 2. Last year’s parade featured 50,000 participants and half a million spectators. Stockholm EuroPride from July 25 to August 3, 2008.

Norway approves Gay Marriage

Norway's parliament on Wednesday June 11th, 2008, adopted a new marriage law that allows homosexuals to marry and adopt children and permits lesbians to be artificially inseminated, AFP reports. After a heated debate, the members of parliament adopted the text by a vote of 84 to 41. The three centre-left coalition parties in power and two opposition parties, the Conservatives and the Liberals, voted largely in favour of the law, while the Christian Democrats and the far-right Progress Party voted against it. Norway thus became the sixth country in the world to grant homosexuals the right to marry on an equal footing with heterosexuals, according to Norwegian television TV2. "This decision is of an importance comparable to universal suffrage and our law on parity," Labour Party rapporteur Gunn Karin Gjul said during the debate.

Huge Sao Paulo's Gay Pride

More than a million gays and transsexuals paraded in Brazil's business capital Sao Paulo on Sunday's gay march to urge an end to violence and discrimination. This is the 12th year the parade has been staged. Sao Paulo authorities and Brazilian oil firm Petrobras backed the event, which has become a big money-earner for the city and for tourism in Brazil. "This is the diversity the country wants, the diversity that we have to foster as a country seeking a tourist niche among the gay community," Tourism Minister Marta Suplicy, a former Sao Paulo mayor, said aboard one of the trucks.

Gay soldiers to Parade in Sydney

The military will be represented officially for the first time in today's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade in Sydney. Up to 80 soldiers, sailors, Air Force members and Defence Force employees will join the 10,000-strong street parade, which also marks the 30th anniversary of the internationally renowned event. The chiefs of the army, navy and air force, along with the chief of defence, gave approval for the Australian Defence Force personnel to take part in the Mardi Gras just days before last year's event, but after the cut-off date for parade entries. Anti-Gay violence in Fort Lauderdale

An early morning breakfast in Fort Lauderdale turned into an onslaught of slurs and a beating for a Fort Lauderdale couple, who said they are the victims of a hate crime. The incident occurred Sunday morning outside The Floridian at 1410 E. Las Olas Blvd. The couple and a friend sat down to breakfast about 3 a.m. at an outdoor table. A man got out of his pickup truck, walked by them and promptly began yelling slurs at the trio -- Melbourne Brunner (picture), his partner Mitchell Mart and a friend visiting from out of town. "He was yelling, 'Faggot, were you looking at me, if you were, I'm going to come back there and break your neck. That's what I do to faggots' and then he twisted his hands together," Mart recalled. The men started to get into their car, which was parked two feet from the table, when the pickup driver said, "'That's what faggots do, they run,' " Mart said. As Brunner tried to climb into the passenger seat, the man punched him several times, pushing the car door on him. Brunner fell to the ground, striking his head.
Fort Lauderdale, known for being one of the most gay-friendly communities in the United states, has had an increasing number of violent acts committed against members of the gay community in the last year. Despite Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle's anti-gay comments and the subsequent protests, the gay magazine Out Traveler named Fort Lauderdale America's favorite resort town.
