The Advocate releases an article with new photos by Adam Pretty of Australian diver Matthew Mitcham. The openly gay diver wowed the world with his win last August, but half a year later - with no major endorsements yet - he's ready to prove his gold medal is much more than a flash in the pan. "I don’t want to be just a one-minute wonder," Mitcham says. "I do want to continue being the best, so that when [people] think back, there will be no doubt in their minds that Matthew Mitcham was the best diver of his time. I don’t want people to think that winning the gold medal in Beijing was just me being lucky, you know?" Read full article here.

British Football to Fight Homophobia

Plans to make a film to rid terraces of anti-gay chants have been confirmed by the British Football Association. Peter Tatchell, of gay rights group Outrage, praised the FA for backing the video "after years of lobbying" and hoped a host of players like David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Peter Crouch, Freddie Ljungberg, David James, Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Theo Walcott, Frank Lampard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Owen or Steven Gerrard, will be persuaded to take part. He said: "The plan is to feature big-name stars speaking out against homophobia, in order to make anti-gay chants look as stupid, ignorant and uncool as racist ones... We also want the FA to put it on YouTube and distribute copies to every school in the country... Our aim is to give homophobia the boot - to kick anti-gay prejudice off the pitch and out of the terraces... It will also be a world first, since no other football governing body has even attempted anything as upfront and bold". The video is due to be released later this year and could be shown in schools, cinemas, on television and at grounds, reports The Independent. "We expect the video to have a global impact and reach football fans all over the world; helping break down prejudice and thereby make the game a more welcoming and safe sport for gay players and spectators – not just in Britain but internationally," added Tatchell.
Nigel Owens, openly Gay rugby referee

International rugby referee Nigel Owens believes it would have been much harder to continue his career after revealing he was gay had he been a football official. Not that coming out as gay in the rugby world was easy, BBC News reports. In his new autobiography, Hanner Amser (Half Time), he details the fear he felt before taking the decision and how being gay drove him to attempt suicide as a young man. "Actually saying those three little words "I am gay" was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do," he writes. "I have been lucky. Everybody from supporters to players to coaches to administrators have all been very supportive... I had an e-mail from a young guy off Facebook who had gone through the same thing I had gone through - he was gay and could not tell his parents. But they found out through television that I was gay and their attitude towards gay people had changed. He felt more comfortable that he could tell them so he did so and was accepted pretty well."
Mitcham, Sports Performer of the Year

Producing the highest-scoring dive in Olympic history to win gold hasn't been enough for Matthew Mitcham to attract a single sponsor since the Beijing Games. But sports fans last night ensured he got some long-overdue recognition at the Sports Performer Awards presented by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in conjunction with Colonial First State in Melbourne. Readers voted that Mitcham's upset win over his favoured Chinese opponents, sealed with a final dive that received a perfect 10 from four of the seven diving judges, was the year's best sporting achievement. Despite being the first Australian male to win a diving gold medal for 84 years, Mitcham has since discovered that producing that record-breaking dive "hasn't been a financial goldmine". One possible explanation, unfortunately, for the lack of interest is that Mitcham is openly gay, although David Lyall, from Mitcham's management group said the diver's sexuality had "never come up in discussions" with prospective sponsors, reports SMH.

Breakfast With Scot in theaters

Breakfast With Scot tells the story of Eric (Tom Cavanagh), he’s managed to turn his stint as an ex- Toronto Maple Leaf into a full-time gig as commentator for sports TV. He and his partner Sam (Ben Shenkman), a lawyer, live discreetly on a tree-lined street in Toronto. All their tranquility is disrupted when they receive news that Sam's brother Billy’s ex-girlfriend has died, leaving custody of her son Scot (Noah Bernett) to Billy. But adventure-seeking Billy is somewhere in South America, and that leaves Scot without a guardian. Much to Eric’s disapproval, Sam agrees to take Scot in. Enter Scot, budding queen of an 11 year old, who is Eric’s mirror opposite. Dressed in vibrant colors, his mother’s charm bracelet and with a penchant for musicals and Christmas carols, he’s not quite the ‘boy’ they expected. Officially sanctioned by the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Breakfast With Scot represents the first time a professional sports league has allowed their logo and uniforms to be used in a gay-themed movie. Golden Mitcham wins in Beijing

Australian Matthew Mitcham has won a gold medal in the men’s 10 metre platform diving in Beijing, the Sunday Times reports. The 20-year-old openly gay diver produced a sensational final dive that the judges awarded a score of 112.10. Mitcham achieved an overall score of 537.95 to defeat China's Zhou Luxin (533.15), who had led the final until the final round, to grab Australia's second diving medal of the Games. After struggling to combat his nerves in the 3m springboard competition, in which he missed the final, Mitcham took a different approach to his 10m campaign to ensure the butterflies were kept at bay. "I have tried approaching 10m a lot different to 3m and just trying to enjoy the competition and just have fun," Mitcham said before the final. "The main thing for me is to try and have fun and it seems to relax me more and I have been diving a bit better."
