Obama, McCain and Gay Marriage

Presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain appeared Saturday on the same stage for the first time in months, although they overlapped only briefly. In a forum moderated by Pastor Rick Warren in Lake Forest, Calif, the two men shared their views on a range of moral, foreign and domestic issues as they near their respective nominating conventions. Both men said marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Obama added that he supports civil unions for gay partners, which would give them rights such as hospital visits with one another. He said he opposed a constitutional ban on gay marriage, calling the matter a state issue. McCain's answer was less clear. If a federal court ordered his state, Arizona, to honor gay marriages allowed in Massachusetts, he said, "then I would favor a constitutional amendment. Until then, I believe the states should make the decisions within their own states." Read the full Associated Press report.

Gay couples reflect the love of God

Archbishop of Canterbury compares gay relationships to marriage. In private correspondence, seen by the Daily Telegraph, Dr Rowan Williams, leader of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion refutes the Church's traditional teaching that homosexuality is sinful. Furthermore, he expresses his hope that the Church will change its position to be more accepting of gay partnerships. His comments – made in a letter written shortly before he became Archbishop of Canterbury – will infuriate the conservatives who boycotted the recent Lambeth Conference in protest at the presence of liberals who elected Anglicanism's first openly gay bishop. Leading evangelicals have claimed that he is in an "untenable position". "The Bible does not address the matter of appropriate behaviour for those who are, for whatever reason, homosexual by instinct or nature," Dr Williams writes. "By the end of the 80s I had definitely come to the conclusion that scripture was not dealing with the predicament of persons whom we should recognise as homosexual by nature. I concluded that an active sexual relationship between two people of the same sex might therefore reflect the love of God in a way comparable to marriage, if and only if it had the about it the same character of absolute covenanted faithfulness." Camp Out on DVD

Can you be gay and christian at the same time? Camp Out is a feature documentary film that follows ten Midwestern teenagers as they attend the first overnight Bible Camp for gay Christian youths. For these six boys and four girls, it’s just as hard to come out as Christian as it is to come out as gay. They’re caught in the battle between religion, politics and sexuality that’s raging in the United States today. These kids are outsiders – their straight classmates ostracize them and their churches reject them. But like all teens, they yearn to feel at home, somewhere.

Struggling to find a way to be true to both their spirituality and their sexual identity, these teens come to camp hoping to finally find a place of acceptance. Camp Out is now available on DVD. Watch a video...

Uninvited Gay Bishop showed up

Since openly gay Gene Robinson, 61, was consecrated as bishop in New Hampshire five years ago, his presence has threatened to split the 77 million-member Anglican Communion, the world's third-largest church. Rowan Williams, archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual leader of the Communion, did not invite Robinson to the church's gathering in Canterbury, known as the Lambeth Conference, in an attempt to calm any move toward formal schism. Robinson, with no invitation, showed up, though he cannot go to the official meetings. "I would rather be on the inside. It's never okay to be relegated to the fringe by someone," said Robinson, a charismatic man with short graying hair and rimless glasses. If he succeeds in explaining how he can be "unabashedly gay and unabashedly Christian" to even one more person who cannot fathom it, he said, "it will have been worth it," reports The Washington Post. Californians to vote on Gay Marriage ban

An initiative that would again outlaw gay marriage in California has qualified for the November ballot, Debra Bowen, the Secretary of State announced Monday. She added that a random check of signatures submitted by the measure's sponsors showed that they had gathered enough names for it to be put to voters. The measure would amend the state constitution to "provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." If approved by a majority of voters on Nov. 4, the amendment would overturn the recent California Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in the state. Gay men and lesbians would still be able to get married between then and the election, even with the initiative pending, unless the court agrees to stay its decision until after Nov. 4, as the amendment's sponsors have requested. Gambia arrests Spaniards for gay proposals

The International Herald Tribune reports that authorities in Gambia have arrested two Spanish men for allegedly making "homosexual proposals" to taxi drivers, police said Monday. The arrests come less than three weeks after Gambia's president ordered homosexuals to leave the West African country and threatened in a nationally televised speech to "cut off the head" of anyone discovered to be gay (see previous post). The Spanish nationals were taken into custody Friday after the taxi drivers reported being solicited by them, police spokesman Sulayman Secka said. He declined to give further details on the incident or say when the men might be released. In his speech last month, President Yahya Jammeh also threatened to close down hotels that rent rooms to gays. "We are in a Muslim-dominated country and I will not and shall never accept such individuals in this country," he said.

The Colbert Report on Gay Marriage

Stephen Colbert spoke with Tony Perkins, conservative Christian president of the Family Research Council about the California Supreme Court ruling to legalize gay marriage. Colbert said: "I think it would really be much better for the anti-gay-marriage side if they obeyed everything in the Bible, not just the anti-gay-marriage part." He then asked: "Where did Jesus talk about gay people?... Cause I keep on looking for that so I could win some arguments." Watch a video...

Gambia President threats to kill Gays

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has threatened to behead gays unless they leave the country, according to reports. "The Gambia is a country of believers ... sinful and immoral practices (such) as homosexuality will not be tolerated in this country," the president told a crowd at a political rally on May 15, local journalists said today. He went on to say he would "cut off the head" of any gay person caught in The Gambia. The anti-gay campaign continued in the Gambian pro-government media this week with the Daily Observer publishing a virulent editorial. "We have said it before and we will say it again. This is a Muslim and Christian country. Both the Koran and the holy Bible condemn homosexuality - pure and simple," the paper wrote on Monday. British gay rights group OutRage today said the Gambian leader's comments came as no surprise. "Jammeh has a long history of homophobia," spokesman Peter Tatchell said. "If he tries to carry out these threats, international aid donors are likely to withdraw their support, and foreign tourists will stay away in droves, thereby damaging the Gambian economy," he added.
