Eurovision Song Contest in Serbia Tonight

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. It was on the 24th of May, 1956, that Europe saw the first ever Eurovision Song Contest. Tonight, Belgrade, the Serbian capital is hosting the 2008 edition. The International Herald Tribune reports that Eurovision, which enjoys a large gay following, has brought into the open the troubles of Serbia's beleaguered homosexual community. One nationalist group, Obraz (Honor), has threatened to attack any gays displaying their sexuality in public during Eurovision. Boris Milicevic, from Gay-Straight Alliance says most Serbs still believe homosexuality is illness. "Serbian people think that homosexuals should not have places where they could gather and socialize," Milicevic said. "Such a level of homophobia in Serbia is among the highest in Europe." That became clear in 2001 when Serbia's gays and lesbians tried to hold the country's first Gay Pride event but ended up being beaten by extremists as the police looked on. So far, the Eurovision events have passed without major incidents. More on the Eurovision Song Contest here...

NewCastle by Dan Castle at Inside Out

Openly gay director and screenwriter Dan Castle’s feature debut is a coming-of-age story that centres on three brothers who share little except for their fraternal bond and the weight of expectation. Seventeen-year-old Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan, pictures below) is a naturally gifted athlete with a dream of winning the Junior Surf Pro championships but he lives in the shadow of his older half-brother Victor’s (Reshad Strik) failure to become surfing’s Next Big Thing. Meanwhile, Jesse’s geeky fraternal twin brother Fergus (Xavier Samuel) just wants to fit in. He is a social outcast with dyed hair, an all-black wardrobe and an aversion to the sun and surf. When Fergus spies Jesse’s surfing buddy, Andy (Kirk Jenkins), outside their house, Fergus suddenly develops an interest in surfing. In order to be allowed to stay away from home overnight, Jesse invites his brother to join him and his friends on a surf weekend up the coast. The opportunity to spend time with Andy is too good for Fergus to pass up. While everyone initially continues to mock him, Fergus stands his ground and starts to earn the group’s respect. He also begins to develop a closeness with Andy that perfectly captures the youthful feeling of attraction - when you aren’t sure whether the other person feels the same way, but your desire to find out makes you fearless.

NewCastle, starring Lachlan Buchanan, Xavier Samuel, Kirk Jenkins, Reshad Strik, Anthony Hayes, Joy Smithers, written and directed by Dan Castle screens at Inside Out, Toronto Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Tuesday May 20 at 9:45pm. Watch a trailer...

Black And Gold by Sam Sparro

Sam Sparro is that classic template for an interesting pop star: the misfit who found his way into the mainstream. Too Australian for America, too American for Australia, and too openly gay for both, his peripatetic upbringing was, by all accounts, a solitary one. Suddenly, the United Kingdom has taken him to its heart, and his very-nearly-chart-topping single Black and Gold has correctly been hailed as this year's "Hey Ya!" or "Crazy", ie, a unifying soul-pop singalong that the whole world loves. More on Sam Sparro here. Watch Black and Gold video...

The U.K. Eurovision Preview Party offers a unique opportunity to see some of this year’s international Eurovision entrants performing in the UK prior to the competition. The venue is London’s Scala nightclub, fittingly located just a few steps away from London’s newly opened Kings Cross St Pancras International rail hub that connects the U.K. to the European mainland. The party is intended to bring the joys of Eurovision back to the U.K. This will be the biggest Eurovision event in London since the city hosted the contest way back in 1977. London’s Scala, 20.00, Friday 25th April 2008. More on the party here... More on the Eurovision song Contest here...
