John Barrowman's new album, Music Music Music, will be available on November 24. The album is produced by Simon Franglen (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand) and Graham Stack (Kylie, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart), with the exception of the first single "What About Us?" which is produced by Chris Braide and will be released on Monday Nov. 17th. Openly gay Torchwood actor and singer, John Barrowman says: "There are three distinct styles on this record. Musical theatre, country and western, and straightforward pop. I wanted to sing songs I've always loved, songs like Bette Midler's From A Distance, Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now and Dusty Springfield’s You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, alongside things like Keith Urban's fantastic You'll Think Of Me.” Watch the video of What About Us...

Captain Jack & Captain John's Gay Kiss

James Marsters, best known for playing vampire Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel, appeared as a guest in Torchwood latest episode. And his character Captain John got in a steamy man-on-man kiss with hero Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman. “I had never kissed a man on film before, but my girlfriend said it was always a fantasy of her's that I would kiss another man,” he said. “Luckily, she was there. She thought it was really hot." Watch a video...

John Barrowman's interview

Captain Jack in Torchwood series, openly gay John Barrowman, talked with The Stage's Matthew Hemley. The actor, who initially made his name in West End musicals by appearing in shows such as Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera and Anything Goes, claims he went into television to prove to people how talented musical theatre actors are. He acknowledges his move from the stage to Doctor Who and Torchwood has raised a few eyebrows among fellow theatre actors, but he is adamant that his intentions have always been for the good of the industry. "For years people would say, ‘They’re just musical theatre, they don’t know how to do anything’. My response is fuck you. We are some of the most talented people in the industry. We sing, we dance, we act, we do it all... Having broken into TV and two of the most popular dramas in the UK and internationally, I can show people how underestimated musical theatre actors are." Referring to his sexuality, he says: "If it has been a problem, no one ever told me... I remember, years ago, when Saturday Night Fever was cast, someone told me I didn’t get it because I was openly gay. To be honest I think that was a bunch of rubbish because I was so not right for that show anyway... I don’t think sexuality matters at all. I am proving that with what I am doing, as are others, like Graham Norton and Paul O’Grady. I know people who lie about being gay because they think it will affect their work chances. And that is just sad."

Where Gays Are On TV, GLAAD's Report

With the arrival of the 2007-2008 television season, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on scripted network television continues to decline, according to an analysis of the upcoming season conducted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The study shows that, despite improved quality, LGBT representations will represent only 1.1% (7) of all series regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule, down from 1.3% (9) in 2006, and 1.4% (10) in 2005. For 12 years, GLAAD's "Where We Are on TV" report has analyzed the character makeup of the network's scripted programming. From information provided by the five broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW — GLAAD examined 87 scripted comedies and dramas announced to air this upcoming season, and counted a total of 650 characters. The seven LGBT regular characters appear on five scripted programs: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, The Office and the midseason series Cashmere Mafia. Six of these seven characters are on ABC, with no lead or supporting LGBT characters scheduled to appear on CBS, FOX or The CW. Cable programming and unscripted reality television, however, include numerous diverse representations that better reflect the LGBT community.

Torchwood on BBC America

Actor John Barrowman was promoting Torchwood during the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles as the show debuts on BBC America on September 8th. Barrowman has only a limited track record in the U.S. because of a disappointing barrier that remains in force in Hollywood, says the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. It doesn't matter than Barrowman looks like a cross between Chris Noth and a sane Tom Cruise. He happens to be gay (see previous post) - a fact that has no bearing on his acting ability or personality, but in terms of his American career, means everything. "I can't walk into a network and go, 'I want you to put me in a show where I'm a leading man,' you know, as a gay man... One of the things I remember they said to me when I did 'Central Park West' for CBS; they told me not to talk about my personal life. I found that insulting, particularly since the man who created the program was gay himself." About his character in Torchwood, Barrowman adds "I've kind of made Jack a hero that I would like to have looked up to as a little boy, because as a little boy, I knew I was gay but I didn't know what it was. Didn't know who to talk to about it... I wanted kids to like him, and I wanted women, men, I wanted everyone to like him." John Barrowman tied the knot

Openly gay actor John Barrowman, star of the BBC's series Torchwood, has signed a civil partnership this week with his partner of 16 years Scott Gill at Cardiff's St David's Hotel. Glasgow-born Barrowman said: "It feels great and I think more gay men and gay women should go ahead and do it as long as they're serious about it... It's not really recognition but it's important for people to see the normality of the entire situation and it forces people who don't agree with gay men and women... to have to accept us. We deserve the rights like everybody else. It's been a long wait but we legitimised our relationship to each other a long time ago when we signed our mortgages together and this is just something that forces people who don't want to recognise it that they have to."
