Jobs unveils Apple's latest innovations

Apple on Tuesday introduced a movie rental service and an ultralight Mac notebook that could set a new industry standard for thinness. “This is the world’s thinnest notebook,” said Steve Jobs. Perhaps its most interesting feature, however, is the one that is missing. The new notebook, the MacBook Air, does not come equipped with an optical drive for playing CDs and DVDs, though one is available as an option for $99. Instead, Apple has equipped it with remote software that lets users play DVDs and CDs on another computer as if they were on the notebook. The new iTunes Movie Rental service, available immediately as a free software update, is offering movies newly released on DVD for download at $3.99 and movies from the rental library for $2.99. Customers have 30 days to view a movie after they have rented it, but only 24 hours to view it completely once they started it. A movie can be moved between devices, such as Macs, TVs and iPod. Steve Jobs also announced a new version of Apple TV that does not require a cable for users to play movies from iTunes directly on the television. The company also released an update to the iPhone that includes several new features, like the ability to send text messages to multiple people at the same time and the addition of maps that show the user’s location. “All of this in two weeks, and we’ve got 50 more weeks to go,” Jobs said.

Student's iPod touch ad goes on TV

A television commercial for the new iPod Touch from Apple, scheduled to begin running on Sunday, is being created by the longtime Apple agency, TBWA/Chiat/Day. It is based on a commercial that an 18-year-old English student — an Apple devotee named Nick Haley, who says he got his first Macintosh when he was 3 — created on his own one day last month and uploaded on YouTube. Among the viewers were marketing employees at Apple in Cupertino, Calif., who asked staff members on the Apple account at TBWA/Chiat/Day to get in touch with Mr. Haley about producing a professional version of the commercial. His spot offers a fast-paced tour of the abilities of the iPod Touch, set to a song titled “Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex” by a Brazilian band, CSS. Nick Haley said he was inspired to make the commercial by a lyric in the song, “My music is where I’d like you to touch.” Watch the TV Ad (left video) and the original (right video)...

iPod touch, Now Shipping...

With the Apple iPod touch, Apple has married the iPhone's revolutionary multi-touch interface to their popular digital media player. So instead of a Click Wheel, you just use your fingers to flick through your music, photos, and video. Two fingers can be used in a pinching or spreading motion as well, which zooms in and out of photos and web pages. That's right, the iPod touch is the first iPod to offer web access. It does this via built-in Wi-Fi support. There's even a special iTunes Wi-Fi Store, so you can browse and purchase new music and video while you're on the road... Apple 8 GB iPod Touch $299 & Apple 16 GB iPod Touch $399 are available here...
