James Franco on Milk

In a BlackBook's interview, James Franco who plays Scott Smith in Gus Van Sant's new film Milk, says that Van Sant's 1991 My Own Private Idaho inspired him to become an actor. "On the most basic level, River Phoenix’s performance was incredible. And Gus brought in so many elements to that film, from Shakespeare to George Eliot." About his role as Scott, Harvey Milk’s long-time lover, Franco says: "Whenever Harvey went out and failed at something, Scott would be there to support him. That was the main function of the character in the film—to provide support." On choosing Franco to play Scott Smith, Gus Van Sant says: "We wanted a romantic couple, and James seemed a perfect combination with Sean (Penn)." "After we wrapped Milk," Franco says, "Sean said to me, 'We’re definitely doing that other movie, but I’m sorry to say that I’m going to have to break up with you now.'"

Asked if he received any new insights about what it might be like to be gay, or in a gay relationship? Franco responds: "As soon as I got out of high school, I was like, I don’t care if anybody’s gay. It doesn’t matter. Doing Milk, I don’t know if it broadened my mind at all. I like to think that I was as open as I could be at that point." James Franco will spend his winter holiday starring in Howl, as Allen Ginsberg, the gay beat poet. He’ll also play an alt-rock singer in a movie called Sympathy for Delicious, directed by Mark Ruffalo. Read BlackBook's interview here.

30 years ago, Harvey Milk was assassinated

Milk, Gus Van Sant's biopic about gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk opened yesterday, the eve of the 30th anniversary of Milk's assassination. And what a triumphant anniversary it is, Milk would have been proud of himself – the picture that bears his name is about to give a new generation of gays downtrodden by recent gay rights losses in Arizona, Florida, Arkansas and California a whole lot to hope for. The movie hits a tone eerily reminiscent to grassroots gay activists and their allies who have been protesting the passage of Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in California, since the day after Election Day. But Harvey Milk's legacy is clearly not confined to the streets of San Francisco, says On Top Magazine. Milk's ascension shook up the establishment because he proved that the gay rights movement was a very real phenomenon, not just chasing rainbows. He delivered bodies to rallies, voters on Election Day, passion to gay politics, and hope where there was little – he delivered a place at the political table for gays and lesbians. And thirty years later he's doing it all again.

No Milk for Cinemark ?

Cinemark theatre chain CEO Alan Stock shelled out $9,999 to pass Prop. 8 in California, but will his theatre chain profit from ticket sales for the forthcoming release of Gus Van Sant's new movie, Milk. Not if a group of people on the web have anything to say about it. NoMilkforCinemark.com is dedicated to convincing ticket buyers to see Milk at a competitor’s theatre. The idea is that if the gay community agrees to buy tickets to see the movie somewhere else, Cinemark will lose revenue from what promises to be one of the most profitable pictures of the holiday season, reports The Advocate.

Diego Luna on Milk and Gay Marriage

Actor Diego Luna (picture with Gus Van Sant), who portrays Milk's tormented lover, Jack, in Gus Van Sant's film Milk, was asked why he said yes to the project, reports the Examiner. "He's a very talented director and then I started to read about Harvey Milk and I realized how important the story was about this guy," Luna mused. "He was a real hero—the kind I would like to see in the cinema. He was also a guy that understood that respect and celebrating differences were an everyday duty... I think Harvey Milk saw politics in the way I see love. It's about understanding and curiosity. I think this is the right time to be talking about somebody like Harvey Milk." Luna, along with costar James Franco, sported a No on Prop 8 button. "I can't vote because I am a Mexican citizen, but I think it's stupid that we even need to be talking about this," Luna said. "Why is the attention of the people on something like trying to ban [same-sex] unions when the state of the world is collapsing. It's sad that we have to discuss this."

Milk premieres in San Francisco

The world premiere of Harvey Milk's biopic brought considerable star power to his beloved Castro Theatre, including director Gus Van Sant and stars Sean Penn (picture above), Josh Brolin, James Franco (top picture below), Emile Hirsch and Diego Luna (bottom picture below). The film follows Milk's rise to office and his and Mayor George Moscone's assassination at City Hall by fellow Supervisor Dan White in 1978. Director Gus Van Sant said he had been talking about making this film for 18 years: "He's an American hero... He's a great example of a man representing his community and his city," reports the AP. Harvey Milk received another tribute earlier in the day, when a historic streetcar featured in the film was dedicated to him. The supervisor had been a champion of public transportation.
