Azariah Southworth's video

The host of a popular Christian youth TV show, The Remix, has come out publicly, and GLAAD is working with him to tell his authentic story. Azariah Southworth, 21, is seen on his syndicated television reality program by more than 200,000 viewers a week. He said he made his decision to go public after seeing the documentary For the Bible Tells Me So, which explores the intersection of Christianity and sexual orientation. “I hope to become a voice for those who are going through the same thing that I’ve gone through,” Southworth said. “I also want to give the church a chance to come forward and begin to love people. Don’t try to change them, just love them. That is all we want and need.” Watch a video of Azariah Southworth explaining his reason for coming out...

Janet Jackson's Interview

Marc Malkin (right picture) had a very interesting interview with Janet Jackson for E! Online. The journalist asked her who she would date if she were gay: "I think I would pick Alicia Keys, for sure. I think she's wonderful." About young gay men who don't see HIV and AIDS as a threat she said: "Yes, they're being a little too - and I am not going to be mild about it - careless. And now there's the whole drug scene with crystal meth... I hear it gives you this high that makes you want to have sex and not use anything. It's scary." About 15-year-old Lawrence King who was murdered in February because he was gay, she commented: "That broke my heart. He was finally coming into his own and being himself and being OK with who he was. He was feeling good about that and not living in this shell and pretending to be someone else. He was letting all of that go and saying, "This is me." But being murdered for being who you are, for being real - we were crushed by that." read the full interview here... Janet will be at the GLAAD 19th Annual Media Awards on Saturday April 26 where Ellen DeGeneres will present her with the Vanguard Award.

Janet Jackson to be Honored by GLAAD

Janet Jackson will be honored by The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) with the Vanguard Award at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The Vanguard Award is presented to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Past recipients include Charlize Theron, Antonio Banderas, Eric McCormack, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli and Whoopi Goldberg. GLAAD also announced that multiple Emmy® Award-winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will present Ms. Jackson with her award. “Ms. Jackson has a tremendous following inside the LGBT community and out, and having her stand with us against the defamation that LGBT people still face in our country is extremely significant," said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. He added, “We are also thrilled that Ellen DeGeneres, a former GLAAD Media Award honoree, will present the Vanguard Award to Ms. Jackson. Any time a media legend like Ms. DeGeneres wants to share in our celebration of fair, accurate and inclusive media representation, we are honored to have her.”
"I have received a number of awards throughout my career but I am so proud to be receiving the Vanguard Award from GLAAD,” said Janet Jackson. “Since it's inception in 1985, GLAAD has taken the lead in making sure that people will no longer be judged by their gender identity or sexual orientation. I applaud them for their continued work and thank them for this honor from the bottom of my heart."

T.R. Knight's National Coming Out PSA

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) releases a new public service announcement (PSA) from Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight. The 20-second spot, unveiled in recognition of National Coming Out Day, is part of "Be an Ally & a Friend" PSA campaign and features Knight telling viewers how important it is to accept their gay friends and family members. The PSA is also a landmark for Knight personally, as one year ago, he came out in the October 19, 2006 issue of People magazine. He made history, becoming the first actor to publicly come out while appearing on one of the top-rated U.S. TV shows. "More and more gay people like T.R. are living their lives openly and honestly," says GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. "T.R.'s coming out has had tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance."
National Coming Out Day is observed every October 11. This year is especially meaningful, as 2007 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1987 Gay and Lesbian March on Washington and the unfurling of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on the National Mall. Watch T.R. Knight's PSA...

Where Gays Are On TV, GLAAD's Report

With the arrival of the 2007-2008 television season, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on scripted network television continues to decline, according to an analysis of the upcoming season conducted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The study shows that, despite improved quality, LGBT representations will represent only 1.1% (7) of all series regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule, down from 1.3% (9) in 2006, and 1.4% (10) in 2005. For 12 years, GLAAD's "Where We Are on TV" report has analyzed the character makeup of the network's scripted programming. From information provided by the five broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW — GLAAD examined 87 scripted comedies and dramas announced to air this upcoming season, and counted a total of 650 characters. The seven LGBT regular characters appear on five scripted programs: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, The Office and the midseason series Cashmere Mafia. Six of these seven characters are on ABC, with no lead or supporting LGBT characters scheduled to appear on CBS, FOX or The CW. Cable programming and unscripted reality television, however, include numerous diverse representations that better reflect the LGBT community.

Be an Ally & a Friend

LGBT people are our mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins. This is a fact and it isn't going away. You have the opportunity to be an ally and a friend at home, school, church and work. A straight ally can merely be someone who is supportive and accepts the LGBT person, or a straight ally can be someone who personally advocates for equal rights and fair treatment. Allies are some of the most effective and powerful voices of the LGBT movement. Not only do allies help people in the coming-out process, they also help others understand the importance of equality, fairness, tolerance and mutual respect. Learn more about GLAAD's Be an Ally & a Friend Campaign and watch a Public Service Annoucement...
