Ellen DeGeneres pays to say No on Prop 8

The NO on Prop 8 campaign, Equality for All, announces that Ellen DeGeneres has made a media buy to urge Californians to vote NO on Proposition 8. "In her desire to speak directly to the people of California, Ellen has stepped up as only Ellen can," said Patrick Guerriero, Campaign Director. "Her voice has a tremendous ability to elevate this conversation above the scare tactics and help people understand what's at stake for the people they know and care about. Her generous contribution to the campaign comes just at the right moment – and is done in a way that ensures her conversation with voters continues to Election Day. And it delivers our message that Proposition 8 is unfair and just plain wrong." Acording to GLAAD, Ellen has purchased $100,000 of television air time to broadcast her special video to confront false and misleading scare tactics used by those supporting the proposition. Azariah Southworth's video

The host of a popular Christian youth TV show, The Remix, has come out publicly, and GLAAD is working with him to tell his authentic story. Azariah Southworth, 21, is seen on his syndicated television reality program by more than 200,000 viewers a week. He said he made his decision to go public after seeing the documentary For the Bible Tells Me So, which explores the intersection of Christianity and sexual orientation. “I hope to become a voice for those who are going through the same thing that I’ve gone through,” Southworth said. “I also want to give the church a chance to come forward and begin to love people. Don’t try to change them, just love them. That is all we want and need.” Watch a video of Azariah Southworth explaining his reason for coming out...

Janet Jackson's Interview

Marc Malkin (right picture) had a very interesting interview with Janet Jackson for E! Online. The journalist asked her who she would date if she were gay: "I think I would pick Alicia Keys, for sure. I think she's wonderful." About young gay men who don't see HIV and AIDS as a threat she said: "Yes, they're being a little too - and I am not going to be mild about it - careless. And now there's the whole drug scene with crystal meth... I hear it gives you this high that makes you want to have sex and not use anything. It's scary." About 15-year-old Lawrence King who was murdered in February because he was gay, she commented: "That broke my heart. He was finally coming into his own and being himself and being OK with who he was. He was feeling good about that and not living in this shell and pretending to be someone else. He was letting all of that go and saying, "This is me." But being murdered for being who you are, for being real - we were crushed by that." read the full interview here... Janet will be at the GLAAD 19th Annual Media Awards on Saturday April 26 where Ellen DeGeneres will present her with the Vanguard Award.

Janet Jackson will be honored by The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) with the Vanguard Award at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The Vanguard Award is presented to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Past recipients include Charlize Theron, Antonio Banderas, Eric McCormack, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli and Whoopi Goldberg. GLAAD also announced that multiple Emmy® Award-winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will present Ms. Jackson with her award. “Ms. Jackson has a tremendous following inside the LGBT community and out, and having her stand with us against the defamation that LGBT people still face in our country is extremely significant," said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. He added, “We are also thrilled that Ellen DeGeneres, a former GLAAD Media Award honoree, will present the Vanguard Award to Ms. Jackson. Any time a media legend like Ms. DeGeneres wants to share in our celebration of fair, accurate and inclusive media representation, we are honored to have her.”
"I have received a number of awards throughout my career but I am so proud to be receiving the Vanguard Award from GLAAD,” said Janet Jackson. “Since it's inception in 1985, GLAAD has taken the lead in making sure that people will no longer be judged by their gender identity or sexual orientation. I applaud them for their continued work and thank them for this honor from the bottom of my heart."
