Where Gays Are On TV, GLAAD's Report

With the arrival of the 2007-2008 television season, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on scripted network television continues to decline, according to an analysis of the upcoming season conducted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The study shows that, despite improved quality, LGBT representations will represent only 1.1% (7) of all series regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule, down from 1.3% (9) in 2006, and 1.4% (10) in 2005. For 12 years, GLAAD's "Where We Are on TV" report has analyzed the character makeup of the network's scripted programming. From information provided by the five broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW — GLAAD examined 87 scripted comedies and dramas announced to air this upcoming season, and counted a total of 650 characters. The seven LGBT regular characters appear on five scripted programs: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, The Office and the midseason series Cashmere Mafia. Six of these seven characters are on ABC, with no lead or supporting LGBT characters scheduled to appear on CBS, FOX or The CW. Cable programming and unscripted reality television, however, include numerous diverse representations that better reflect the LGBT community.

LOGGERHEADS
Inspired by true events, Loggerheads interweaves three separate but related stories that take place in different parts of North Carolina. On Mother's Day 1999, Mark (Kip Pardue), a handsome young drifter with an interest in endangered loggerhead turtles, begins a relationship with motel handyman George (Michael Kelly). On Mother's Day 2000, Mark's adoptive mother Elizabeth (Tess Harper) wonders what has become of her estranged son. On Mother's Day 2001, Mark's birth mother Grace (Bonnie Hunt) quits her job to begin a search for the child she gave up years before-a search that ultimately brings the stories together. For such a quiet and understated movie, Loggerheads has a lot of ambition: In addition to being a gay love story, it's also about the push and pull between parents and children, the hairline fractures in a marriage, and the delicate balance of a neighborhood.
