Cheyenne Jackson stars in Xanadu

Cheyenne Jackson seen on Broadway in All Shook Up or on film in United 93 is currently starring on stage in Xanadu, the new Broadway musical (see previous post). When asked by After Elton wether being an openly gay actor has been a detriment to his career, helped it or had no net effect at all, Cheyenne jacksons answered: "I think it's been a detriment, probably just a little bit. Had I not been out and open, I think I might have gotten some movies that I screen-tested for. People may have said, “The dude's gay; how are we going to market this?” But it's not an issue for me, because being out is very freeing." After Elton then asked who he would want to play with in another Hollywood big, gay love story like Brokeback Mountain: "Hmm, that's a tough one. [Starts to say someone's name, then stops:] I won't say him, because I don't want it to be weird the next time I see him. [Pauses, then comes up with another name:] Ewan McGregor. I'd do a love scene with him any day. Or Hugh Jackman. I've never met him, but he said some lovely things about me in the press when I was in All Shook Up – and we have the same agent. He's an idol of mine, for sure." Read the full interview here.
On July 11, the day after Xanadu on Broadway opened to extremely positive reviews in both the New York Times and Variety, the musical broke a box-office record at the Helen Hayes Theatre (located in Manhattan, NY at 240 West 44th Street).

Cheyenne Jackson Skates into Xanadu

Cheyenne Jackson (left picture), the openly-gay actor who last year won acclaim for playing gay hero Mark Bingham, one of the real-life characters in the Oscar-nominated Paul Greengrass' film United 93, will assume the role of Sonny in Xanadu on Broadway which is currently in previews at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York. Starting June 22, Jackson, will replace James Carpinello (right picture), who was forced to temporarily leave the production after sustaining an injury during a roller-skating rehearsal on Tuesday. Xanadu will no longer open as scheduled on June 26, no new opening date has been set yet. In a statement, Jackson said: "I'm excited to join the cast of Xanadu while James Carpinello recovers-my heart goes out to him, as he spent months working on this project, only to be injured so close to opening night. I am honored to borrow his skates. I owe a lot to [director] Christopher Ashley and [writer] Douglas Carter Beane and would gladly paint their apartments if they called and asked." Xanadu on Broadway also stars Kerry Butler as Kira, Tony Roberts as Danny and Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa as the evil Muses.
Xanadu on Broadway rolls along to the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, like Magic, All Over The World, Suddenly, I’m Alive, The Fall and Xanadu, to name a few, and is based on the original Universal Picture’s cult classic movie of the same title, which starred Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly in 1980.
