In Sunday's Brothers & Sisters season finale episode, the Walker family and guests have gathered in the living room to watch Kevin (Matthew Rhys) exchange vows with longtime beau Scotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane). This is no typical TV wedding. It's a gay commitment ceremony - the first same-sex union on American network TV between series regulars. "It's all very progressive, evolved and about time," says Rhys. "It's a milestone, and I was really quite pleased that I got to be a part of it," echoes Calista Flockhart, who plays Kevin's big sis Kitty. "It would be interesting to go down the adoption route and see from a legal aspect how Kevin would campaign for that," says Rhys, whose character is an attorney. Executive producer Monica Breen assures, "They will be a family. Kevin deserves a stable relationship in the same way that Kitty, Sarah and all the others deserve it. He will be facing many questions in his life — but now he has someone to share that with." Watch a video...

Janet Jackson with the Vanguard Award and Rufus Wainwright with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, were also honoured for their efforts in fighting discrimination. On ABC's Brothers & Sisters, Canadian actor Luke Macfarlane plays Scotty Wandell, a gay man in a serious relationship with Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys). Next month, in the season finale he'll dress his best and say his vows as his character marries his same-sex partner. In an exclusive interview with the Globe & Mail, the 28-year-old actor confides that he wants to be married himself some day, and has finally decided to go public with his own sexual orientation. Though no secret to his family and close friends, Macfarlane has, until now, been guarded about his personal life as a gay man: "I don't know what will happen professionally... that is the fear, but I guess I can't really be concerned about what will happen, because it's my truth." Welsh Hollywood star Matthew Rhys is now patron of a Welsh festival celebrating gay and lesbian film, the Iris Prize Festival. The Cardiff-born actor agreed to become a patron of the event after winning critical acclaim as gay lawyer Kevin Walker in ABC's drama Brothers And Sisters. In an IC Wales interview with Karen Price, he says he’s proud his character goes against stereotypes. Kevin is not the first gay role which Rhys has landed. He played a homosexual in his first play Cardiff East, in which he had to appear naked on stage. And, along with his best friend Ioan Gruffudd, he was one half of the camp couple Hob and Nob in Very Annie Mary, which was directed by Sara Sugarman, who is also a festival patron. “Sara wanted us to be 100% cliched,” laughs Rhys. But the actor has won praise for portraying Brothers And Sisters’ Kevin in a non-stereotypical way. “I had a long chat with the creator and one of the writers. They said, ‘Don’t go off and research gay people.’ He’s just a guy who happens to be gay. He’s not governed by his sexuality. He has none of the cliched feminine traits. He’s a regular guy.” The Iris Prize is produced by the Festivals Company. The Company was formed in 2006 by Berwyn Rowlands and James Nee. The purpose of Iris is to create an annual international prize to recognise, celebrate and promote gay and lesbian moving image content, which will also promote tolerance, acceptance and further understanding of the credibility and business of gay and lesbian filmmaking. The Festival will be held at Cineworld and Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, Wales, from October 4 to 6. Tickets can be purchased online at www.irisprize.org.

With the arrival of the 2007-2008 television season, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) representations on scripted network television continues to decline, according to an analysis of the upcoming season conducted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The study shows that, despite improved quality, LGBT representations will represent only 1.1% (7) of all series regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule, down from 1.3% (9) in 2006, and 1.4% (10) in 2005. For 12 years, GLAAD's "Where We Are on TV" report has analyzed the character makeup of the network's scripted programming. From information provided by the five broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW — GLAAD examined 87 scripted comedies and dramas announced to air this upcoming season, and counted a total of 650 characters. The seven LGBT regular characters appear on five scripted programs: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, The Office and the midseason series Cashmere Mafia. Six of these seven characters are on ABC, with no lead or supporting LGBT characters scheduled to appear on CBS, FOX or The CW. Cable programming and unscripted reality television, however, include numerous diverse representations that better reflect the LGBT community.
