Brokeback Mountain censored on Italian TV

Italian TV Channel Rai Due has cut gay scenes from Oscar-winner Ang Lee's movie Brokeback Mountain. Two love scenes between the male protagonists had been excised, provoking furious accusations from gay-rights groups of censorship driven by creeping homophobia in Italy. "The need to change a film about homosexual love into a film about simple male friendship says a lot about the current cultural climate," said Franco Grillini, president of Gaynet. The cuts - involving a kiss between actors Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and a love scene in a tent - came days after the Vatican attacked an EU proposal for the UN to formally condemn discrimination against gay people. Rai on Tuesday claimed the cuts were an honest mistake and promised to broadcast the full version of the 2005 film. Critics noted that while the gay love scenes were removed, censors left a heterosexual sex scene in Monday night's version, reports the Guardian. Watch a video of the tent scenes...

Anti-Gay Church to picket Ledger Funeral

A US Church described as a "hate group" has promised to form a picket at Heath Ledger's funeral because he played a gay cowboy in the film Brokeback Mountain. The controversial Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), a Kansas-based congregation infamous for its demonstrations outside funerals for US soldiers killed in Iraq, issued a homophobic statement which said the Australian actor, who was found dead yesterday, was “now in hell”. “WBC will picket this pervert’s funeral, in religious protest,” the statement said. “God hates the sordid, tacky bucket of slime seasoned with vomit known as Brokeback Mountain – and He hates all persons having anything to whatsoever to do with it. Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there. He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay,” WBC spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper said. The Church, which has been classified by the Southern Poverty Law Centre as a “hate group”, also planned to hold a demonstration outside of the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony.

Heath Ledger Found Dead in NY at 28

Australian actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said. The Academy Award nominated actor was 28. Heath Ledger was unresponsive when he was found by a housekeeper who had gone to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse in the Soho apartment, police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN. "Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed. This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet," Browne said. The pills appeared to be over-the-counter sleeping medication, said police spokeswoman Barbara Chen. Ledger was declared dead at about 3:30 p.m..
Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, and named Heathcliff Andrew after the main characters of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. He began acting at a local theater as a child. He passed up several scripts before taking a role in the Revolutionary War drama The Patriot. But Ledger was perhaps best known for his 2005 portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain (co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal), about two cowboys who had a secret romantic relationship. The role earned him an Oscar nomination. In a written statement, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said it mourns Ledger's death, adding that his portrayal of Del Mar "changed hearts and minds in immeasurable ways." One more Golden Lion for Ang Lee

Taiwanese director Ang Lee picked up his second Golden Lion for best film at the Venice film festival on Saturday for his erotic spy thriller Se, Jie (Lust, Caution). Victorious two years ago with Brokeback Mountain, which also won him an Oscar, this time Lee served up a tense drama set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the 1940s. Veteran US director Brian De Palma won the Silver Lion for his hard-hitting Iraq war film Redacted. The jury also bestowed a special 75th anniversary Golden Lion on legendary Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. The Volpi Cups for Best actors went to Brad Pitt for The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford by Andrew Dominik and to Australian actress Cate Blanchett for I’m Not There by Todd Haynes. This year, the Queer Lion, a new prize for the best film that accurately portrays gay themes or characters went to Ed Radtke's coming of age film The Speed of Life and Kenneth Branagh's remake of Sleuth won a special mention. Ang Lee to help Beijing Olympics

Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, whose film Brokeback Mountain was banned in China, has agreed to work as a creative consultant with organizers for 2008 Summer Games in Beijing... Beijing regards Taiwan as part of China and censors any reference to the island as its own nation. Homosexuality is also a sensitive subject in the country where, until 2001, it was listed as a mental disorder. The film was not released in theatres in China and is illegal to sell on DVD.
