Rufus Wainwright, MTV Networks president Brian Graden and the CBS soap opera "As The World Turns" (picture Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann) were among the big winners Monday at the 19th annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards ceremony held at New York's Marriott Marquis. Strand Releasing's Middle East political romance "The Bubble"and Paramount's fantasy "Stardust" (featuring Robert De Niro as a gay pirate) took home outstanding film awards, as did First Run's religion documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So." "Turns" won outstanding daily drama. The show includes a gay romantic story line. Judy Shepard won the top Excellence in Media Award for her efforts to stop anti-gay violence after the death of her son Matthew Shepard. Graden took home the Vito Russo Award for his networks' inclusion of gays in programming, and cable network BET J won special recognition for the same. ABC's "Boston Legal" won outstanding individual episode (in a series without a regular lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered character) for "Do Tell." Additional GLAAD awards will be presented in South Florida on April 12 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Los Angeles on April 26 at the Kodak Theatre, and in San Francisco on May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott.

Not enough As The World Turns' Gay Kisses

As The World Turns' couple is relegated to hugs and off-screen affection when hetero pairs smooch away, viewers complain reports the Los Angeles Time. While heterosexual couples were kissing, Nuke (as fans call the couple) was restricted to holding hands, playing with one another's neck scarves and sharing meaningful looks. Ensuing complaints of discrimination to CBS and the show's producer and sponsor, Procter & Gamble, had no effect. And the last straw apparently arrived on Valentine's Day, when every other couple but Nuke shared a kiss. They hugged instead. Online fans began a nationwide media blitz Feb. 20 to bring attention to the show, which has been twice nominated for an award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). "Presenting a gay couple on television only to relegate them to insulting hugs and slaps on the back is the 21st century version of putting African Americans on the back of the bus," wrote one disgruntled fan named Tony. "We're simply supposed to be happy that we got the ride at all. This is 2008, and yet CBS and Procter & Gamble are clearly stuck in the past." Jeannie Tharrington, a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble Productions, denied that the show's writers were discriminating. "We're trying to be sensitive to all the different audiences who watch our show. We do make our decision based on what we think is best for the show's diverse audience and what's best creatively." As The World Turns... Gay story line

Van Hansis (left picture) and Jake Silbermann (right picture), who play gay characters Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer in CBS's As the World Turns, spoke with The Advocate about the attention the gay story line has generated and how have viewers reacted to Luke and Noah? Van Hansis said: "They've been really supportive. I get tons of mail and almost all of it is positive. If it’s a negative letter or e-mail, it's usually people who can't see past their own limitations and prejudices. And they don’t have a very good grasp of grammar or punctuation." "The fan response has been really great to both the individual characters and where we're taking the relationship. Noah and Luke were voted top couple in a Soap Opera Digest poll. The funny thing is, a lot of people want them to be happy, but a lot want them to suffer heartache and tragedy, because that's what couples on daytime TV do. It's a good sign, actually," answered Jake Silbermann. Watch what happens to Luke and Noah this week...

Van Hansis Thanks Gay Kiss fans

On his CBS' blog, Van Hansis from As The World Turns thanks everyone who has been supportive of the Luke and Noah gay storyline: "The kiss between the two was a hit, as I think everyone involved knew it would be. On youtube the video was the second most watched for the weekend after it aired on CBS. The response Jake as well as the producers and I have gotten has been so overwhelmingly positive. In fact, out of the over one hundred emails and letters I received, only one was negative. So in my mind that says that the pairing has a 99% approval rating. I consider that not bad for something that not too long ago would have been considered 'edgy'. People from all walks of life are embracing Luke and Noah and want them to be happy. That is pretty awesome. Also, my personal belief is that the hugely positive reaction says a lot about what we stand for as a country. We need to accept each other and embrace differences of all kinds. We need not to label someone who has a different skin color, sexual orientation, social class, or country of origin as 'the other'. The moment people start ostracizing and judging is the moment that we start to fragment, as a community and as an individual. I like to think of people on the whole as good, and accepting of differences. With the reaction I have witnessed to 'the kiss' has affirmed this belief."

As The World Turns... Gay

Noah made him clear he was not gay and didn't want to lose Luke as his friend. Then, in last Friday's episode, Maddie (Alexandra Chando) interrupts a moment of near intimacy between Luke and Noah.
