Anthony Callea joins Big Gay Day 2008

Australian idol, Anthony Callea will headline Big Gay Day at The Wickham Hotel on March 9. The openly gay singer will be joined by an impressive guest line-up including ARIA nominee Kate Miller-Heidke, 90s pop sensation Melissa Tkautz and US diva sensation Martha Walsh from The Weather Girls. More than 6000 people are expected to attend this year's event and organisers are chuffed to have secured the Australian Idol warbler who recently split from long-term boyfriend Paul Riggio. The gay poster-boy, who came out after his accidental on-air "outing" by a Sydney radio station last year, has since been a big campaigner for gay causes. Big Gay Day, now in its eighth year, has raised more than $80,000 for support and counselling services for the gay and lesbian community.

Anthony Callea, about being openly Gay

In a Daily Telegraph's frank interview, former Australian Idol star Anthony Callea reveals that despite the controversial circumstances - a radio traffic announcer blurted out that he was homosexual on air - admitting his sexuality has given him new confidence. "The first few days was "Oh my God, I did it". I was happy I did, but part of me was scared about how people would react. It got easier. Then I realised people don't give a s--- so why should I give a s--- about it?", says Callea. "I used to have this barrier up, part of me was scared. Releasing that weight off my shoulders has made me feel comfortable with myself; comfortable with anyone around me too. It's a lot easier for me to walk into a room. There are no secrets any more." Anthony Callea is currently delivering his New Chapter Tour. He'll be touring New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland playing loads of tracks from his latest album A New Chapter plus lots of his classics too. Check here for all venues...

Anthony Callea, finally proud to be Gay

"Yes, I am gay," said Anthony Callea, Australian Idol star, to the Herald Sun. "I have no issue with my sexuality now, but it's taken time to become confident with who I am and happy with who I am... I'm looking forward to living a life with no barriers and not having to worry about saying the right thing... I don't think it's a big issue. Who cares? If people have an issue with it, it's their issue." The 24-year-old pop singer added that he first denied being gay in 2004 because he feared being outed may have harmed his chances in the Idol Contest. "You learn from your mistakes. I was 21, 22 at the time," he said. "I didn't want to be known as just the gay contestant from Idol... It was a very confusing time." Watch him singing his number 1 hit The Prayer the highest-selling Australian single of all time (left) and his latest song Addicted To You (right)...
